The Monterey Jazz Festival takes place each September at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, a short way inland from the water, and it has run continuously longer than any other jazz festival. That history is not decoration. It is why the programming still reaches past the obvious names and why the audience skews toward people who know what they are listening to.
The site shapes the experience. It is a fairgrounds under oaks rather than a stadium, with a main arena and several smaller indoor and outdoor stages running at the same time. Sets overlap on purpose. The standard way to do it is to move between stages rather than hold one seat all night, with food stalls and record vendors filling the ground in between.
It also falls in the best month on this coast. September is when the marine layer thins, the ocean reaches its warmest and the summer crowds have gone, so for once the festival lands in genuinely good weather. Evenings still cool hard under the trees. Check this year's dates and programme with the organiser before you book.
Understand the ticket structure before you buy. Access to the grounds and the smaller stages is one thing; a reserved seat in the main arena is another, and the two are usually sold together in packages. If your interest is discovery rather than one headline set, grounds access and the side stages is the better and cheaper festival.
Lodging is the real constraint. Festival weekend is one of the handful that fills the Monterey Peninsula and pushes minimum stays, and it sits inside the busiest month of the local year. Book well ahead. Staying in downtown Monterey or Seaside puts you close enough to avoid driving to the site, which matters more than usual because fairgrounds parking is limited and the streets around it are residential.
Bring layers, and bring more than you think you need. September afternoons here are pleasant and September nights are cold, and the fairgrounds are outdoors and shaded. A jacket, long pants and something to sit on for the arena benches will cover it. If you want quiet nights and lower rates in the same month, stay on the Santa Cruz side of the bay and drive down for the day.
