Oxnard sits in the middle of one of the most productive farming districts in California. Drive any of the roads between the 101 and the water and you are looking at row crops running flat to the horizon, with the mountains behind them. Strawberries are the crop the city is known for, and in the growing months you will smell them before you see the field.
The agriculture is not the attraction, though. The food is. Generations of farmworking families built one of the strongest Mexican food scenes on this coast here, and it is concentrated in small family places rather than in a restaurant district. Taquerias, seafood counters, weekend-only specialties, most of them a few miles from anywhere a visitor would otherwise go.
Birria is the thing to plan around. Many places run it as a weekend item and it sells out, which means Saturday or Sunday morning rather than Sunday evening. Ask before you assume it is on the menu.
Roadside produce stands sit along the ag roads and they are worth pulling over for. What is on the table follows the harvest, so it is not the same in March as in September, and the strawberries are best when the fields around the stand are being picked. Bring cash and buy less than you think you want, because a flat of berries is a serious commitment for a week's stay.
Channel Islands Harbor is the other side of Oxnard: seafood off the boats, flat water for paddling, and the departure point for one of the island crossings. Pairing a harbor morning with lunch at a taqueria inland is about as good a use of a day here as exists.
Be clear about the tradeoff. Oxnard is a working city, not a resort strip. The beaches on this side are wide, long and often nearly empty, which is the appeal, but there is very little walkable dining near them, so dinner is a drive almost every time. Come here for the food and the space, and stay somewhere else if what you want is to leave the car parked for a week. Your local manager knows which taquerias are running birria on a given weekend, which is the single most useful thing anyone can tell you about Oxnard.
