The Ventura County Fair runs at the fairgrounds in Ventura, and the fairgrounds sit directly on the beach at the north end of the promenade, beside the pier. That siting is the character of the whole thing. You get livestock barns, a carnival midway, competitive exhibits and grandstand events, and the ocean is on the other side of the fence.
It is a genuine agricultural fair for a county that is genuinely agricultural. Ventura and Oxnard sit in one of the most productive growing valleys in the country, and the exhibits reflect that rather than performing it. If you have been to a fair that felt like a carnival with a barn bolted onto the side, this is the other version.
It lands in summer, in the same window as Old Spanish Days Fiesta up the coast, and between them the two events absorb most of the lodging supply from Santa Barbara down to Oxnard. That is worth knowing before you assume a summer week here is easy to book. Check the fair's own dates and schedule before you plan around them.
The best local advice is not to drive onto the site. The fairgrounds sit at the end of Ventura's beachfront promenade, so you can park in the downtown grid or along the beach further south and walk up the paved path with the ocean beside you. The nearby lots fill and the streets around them back up on weekend evenings.
Weekdays are quieter and the midway lines are shorter. Evening is the better half of the day regardless: the fair sits on open ground near the water, the afternoon can be bright and warm on asphalt, and the wind picks up later. Bring a layer, because this coast cools sharply after sunset in every season, August included.
If you are staying in Ventura or Oxnard during the run, you are close enough to walk or bike in, which is the ideal version of this. If you are up in Santa Barbara or Carpinteria, the Pacific Surfliner runs down the coast and the Ventura station sits near the beach a short way from the fairgrounds. Either way, book the week early.
